Guide

Add a PDF and start reading.

From installing RooBook to searching a page and connecting your AI. Everything you need for your first book.

01

What you need

  • A Mac with Apple silicon
  • macOS 15 or later
  • A RooBook account (you can create one in the app with your email address)
  • An AI to analyze books, chosen in RooBook’s settings: OpenAI through Codex and a ChatGPT account (install Codex with brew install codex or the ChatGPT app), Claude with an Anthropic API key, or a model running in Ollama on your Mac

With a model that can’t read images, page text is assembled by rules instead, figures aren’t checked or described, and the book is marked for review.

02

Install

If you use Homebrew, run this command. It installs the app and the roobook command.

brew install --cask arcmanagement/roobook/roobook

Without Homebrew, download the latest DMG, open it, and move RooBook to your Applications folder. The DMG is signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. You can check it against its SHA-256 checksum.

03

Set up

  1. Open RooBook and sign in with your RooBook account, or create one.
  2. Open Settings (⌘ ,).
  3. Under AI for Book Analysis, choose OpenAI, Claude, or Ollama.
  4. For OpenAI, choose Sign In with OpenAI, finish signing in in your browser, and pick the model and reasoning level. For Claude, save your Anthropic API key. For Ollama, pick a model.

RooBook doesn’t store your OpenAI tokens. Sign-in is handled by the Codex installed on your Mac. Your Anthropic API key is kept in your Mac’s Keychain.

The app is in English and Japanese and follows your Mac’s language. To choose one, open Settings, pick it under App Language, and restart RooBook. On iPhone and iPad, choose it in the Settings app under RooBook → Language.

04

Add a PDF

  1. In your library, choose Add PDF in the toolbar.
  2. Select the PDF you want to read.
  3. Follow the progress in the processing queue.
  4. When the book is ready, open it in the Reader.

You can also drop PDFs onto the shelf, or open them with RooBook from Finder. Text recognition and search data are built on your Mac, and chapters, sections, and figures are worked out by the AI you chose. Processing keeps going after you close the window, and RooBook slows down when your Mac is under heavy load.

05

Read and search

Contents

Jump from extracted chapters and sections to the matching page.

Search

See each match marked where it sits on the page.

Figures

Browse figures and tables, and go straight back to their page.

Display Settings

Choose Single Page, Two-Page Spread, or Continuous Scroll, the zoom, and a theme: System, Light, Sepia, or Dark.

Read Aloud

Listen from the current page in reading order, with the Reading Ruler if you like.

Page Thumbnails

See every page grouped by chapter, or go to a page by its printed number.

Notebook

Gather highlights, underlines, notes, and bookmarks, and export them as Markdown.

Structure

Inspect and edit the DoclingDocument and the bibliographic details.

On the shelf, sort and filter your books, see your reading progress, and group them into collections. Books in the same series are stacked on one card.

On iPhone and iPad, the RooBook reading app on the App Store has the same Reader and shelf for books you added on your Mac. Highlights, notes, bookmarks, and your reading position sync across your devices.

06

Use your library from AI

Remote MCP connector

  1. In an AI app that supports remote MCP servers, add a custom connector.
  2. Paste this URL as the server address.
  3. Sign in with your RooBook account when asked, and allow access.
https://api.roobook.app/mcp

The connector uses OAuth, and the AI can reach only the library of the account you connected. We’ve tested it as a custom connector in Claude.

In Claude, you can also add RooBook from the Claude Directory instead of pasting the URL.

roobook CLI

The app includes the roobook command, and the Homebrew install puts it on your PATH. It reads the books cached on your Mac and returns text you can quote, together with page numbers.

roobook doctor
Check the app, the cache, and the Codex in use
roobook library
List the books on this Mac
roobook search --query "desiccation"
Search text and figures
roobook markdown --book <book-id> --pages 42
Read a page range as Markdown with citations

Run roobook --help for every option. Search results include a link that opens the page in RooBook.

Slack

Add the RooBook app to your Slack workspace, then link your own RooBook account the first time you run /roobook. Replies are in English or Japanese.

/roobook <query>
Search the full text of your library
/roobook books
List your books
/roobook language en
Reply in English (ja for Japanese)
/roobook unlink
Unlink your RooBook account

Search by meaning

Searching your whole library, in the app or from AI apps and Slack, matches words. To also find passages that say the same thing in other words, register a DeepInfra or Hugging Face API key under Semantic Search in Settings on your Mac, or from the Account menu on iPhone and iPad. Only the search terms are sent to that service.

07

Delete your account

In the app, open the Account menu and choose Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account details, books, PDFs, OCR data, notes, and reading progress. If something goes wrong, see Help.
